Spinal Stimulation for Individuals with Paraplegia

Lisa A. Beck, MS, APRN, CNS, CRRN Clinical Nurse Specialist

Megan Gill, PT, DPT, NCS Clinician-Researcher

Spinal Cord Injury Program, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN

Spinal cord stimulation offers some hope within the research realm of regeneration and recovery for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). This presentation will emphasize current spinal stimulation technologies available in clinical research laboratories around the world. We will review the mechanisms of epidural stimulation and functional changes in two study participants who underwent stimulation-enabled rehabilitation over one year.

Lisa Beck, MS, APRN, CNS, CRRN is an Assistant Professor of Nursing, College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic. She is a Board-Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist Provider in the SCI Program at Mayo Clinic with a focus on SCI clinical care, education and research. She was Past President of the Academy of SCI Professionals (ASCIP) and currently the Nursing Representative for the Steering Committee of the Consortium for Spinal Cord Medicine and task force member for the revision of Autonomic Dysreflexia and Dysfunction Clinical Practice Guideline. She is a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine and co-editor of a special issue of Topics in SCI Rehabilitation written to guide primary care providers in the clinical care of persons with SCI.

Megan Gill, PT, DPT, NCS is a research physical therapist (PT) in the Mayo Clinic’s Rehabilitation Medicine Research Center’s Assistive and Restorative Technology Laboratory. She was the Clinical Lead PT for the SCI program before transitioning full-time to research. Megan received her M.S. in Physical Therapy from Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and obtained her DPT from The College of St. Scholastica. She is an Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy and has authored, co-authored numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts pertaining to neuromodulation for individuals with SCI. Her research emphasis is geared towards recovery of motor and sensory functions following severe SCI while integrating specialty practices such as rehabilitation.

At the end of this presentation, learners will be able to:

Describe different options of spinal stimulation available currently in research

Review how epidural stimulation works for individuals with complete paraplegia
