After a spinal cord injury (SCI), spontaneous healing can occur, though this process is often frustratingly slow, and can be limited. One promising technology is through breathing modest bouts of low oxygen – called “intermittent low oxygen therapy,” or iLOT.  Recent research has shown that using iLOT, when combined with exercise, stimulates greater recovery than exercise alone. Indeed, combining iLOT with other cutting-edge SCI rehabilitation technologies may result in significant breakthroughs over the next several years. The goal of this talk is to present this possibility, explaining how a series of research studies has shown why iLOT may be a “primer” for improving function after SCI.

Attendees will be able to:

Explain how intermittent low oxygen therapy, iLOT, may lead to recovery after SCI

Describe how iLOT may be used in combination with other emerging technologies

Describe 3 ongoing clinical trials that study the effects of iLOT on restoring movement after SCI

Describe how emerging technologies are particularly powerful when combined with traditional rehabilitation techniques.

About Our Speaker:

Randy Trumbower, PT, PhD joined Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and Harvard Medical School’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in July 2017. Prior to joining Spaulding, Dr. Trumbower held joint faculty appointments as Assistant Professor in the Departments of Rehabilitation Medicine & Biomedical Engineering at Emory University & Georgia Institute of Technology. He also served as Director of Research within Emory’s Department of Rehabilitation Medicine.

Dr. Trumbower is trained as a physical therapist and an engineer with advanced degrees in both. He completed postdoctoral training at Northwestern University and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. He received his MS and PhD degrees in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Connecticut, as well as, his Master’s degree in Physical Therapy from Duke University. Dr. Trumbower’s research interest focuses on the study of novel technologies to improve functional recovery in persons with spinal cord injury. His research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, and other private foundations.

*Please note:  There is a $10 registration fee for the dinner and lecture held at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, 300 1st Ave., Charlestown, MA. No charge for PCAs.
