Shake-a-Leg, located in Newport, Rhode Island, is a center for people of all ages with disabilities. Founded in 1982, it has been working to help people move past their disabilities through a variety of therapies to improve both body and mind. The programs take place at Salve Regina University and Fort Adams State Park. This year the program will offer a variety of programs for both children and adults, including the following:
Whole Life Therapy for Adults is an intensive, goal-orienated residential, second stage rehabilitation program for adults with spinal cord injury anad related central nervous system dysfunction. The program offers team-building, peer-to-peer challenge and group work, as well as physical, occupational and recreational therapy. The program combines various forms of therapies unique to only the Shake-A-Leg program leading towards increased self-sufficiency for each participant. It will run from Sunday, June 18 through Saturday, July 15, 2006.
Whole Life Therapy for Teens is a summer residential therapy program for teens. This program runs for two weeks and gives adolescents with spinal cord injuries and other disabilities from all over the country, an opportunity to develop their independence and responsibility. They are also given the chance to interact with peers, while tryiing new sports and a variety of different therapies. This program will Sunday, July 23 through Saturday, August 5, 2006.
The “Confidence is Cool” Children’s Camp will run weekly day programs in July for kids ages 7-12. This program gives kids with physical disabilities a place to build confidence and friendships while trying new things.
Shake-A-Leg also offers an Adaptive Sailing Program for individuals with physical and developmental disabilities. Sailing programs run June through September.
